This book gives an introduction to the classical, well-known special functions which play a role in mathematical physics, especially in boundary value problems. Calculus and complex function theory form the basis of the book and numerous formulas are given. Particular attention is given to asymptomatic and numerical aspects of special functions, with numerous references to recent literature provided.
This text gives an introduction to the classical well known special functions which play a role in mathematical physics, expecially in boundary value problems. Usually we call a function "specail" when the function, just as the logarithm, the exponential and trigonometric function (the elementry transcendental functions), belongs to the toolbox of the applied mathematician, the physicist or engineer. Usually there is a particular notation and a number of properties of the function and known. This branch of mathematics has a respectable history with great names such as Gauss, Euler, Fourier, Legendre, Bessel and Riemann. They all have spent much time on this subject. A great part of their work was inspired by physics and the resulting differential equations.
The textbook has been written for the students of mathematics, physics and engineering in mind and also researchers in these areas who meet special functions in their work and for whom the result are too scattered in the general litrature. Calculus and complex functions theory are the basis for all this integrals, series, residue and calculus, contour integration in the complex plan and so on.

Nico Temme’s main research interests are the asymptotic and numerical aspects of special functions. He has published numerous papers on these topics, and his well-known book Special Functions: An Introduction to the Classical Functions of Mathematical Physics
Temme was a member of the original editorial committee for the DLMF project, in existence from the mid-1990’s to the mid-2010’s. During this time he served as Associate Editor with responsibilities for all aspects of the project.
