**Boundary Value Problems of Mathematical Physics (Vol-1) ** written by
** Ivar Stakgold **.

The present book is an outgrowth of a series of courses which i taught, first at Harvard and later at Northwestern, to classes consisting primarily of graduate students in engineering and in the physical sciences. By definition a boundary value problem consists of an ordinary or partial differential equation with associated boundary or intial conditions.

Attention will be directed to both analytic and approximate methods for the solution of linear boundary value problems. The principal analytic methods employ either an eigenfunction expansion or a Green's function. Their full understanding will require the developement of a number of mathematical topics such as the theory of distributions, generalized solutions of differential equations, external principals and the spectral theory of differenital and integral operators.

The first volume is devoted primarily to the mathematical topics just cited and to their application to ordinary differential equations and integral equations. The second volume deals with boundary value problems for partial differential equations.

**About Author :- **
The author ** Ivar Stakgold ** (1925–2018) was a Norwegian American mathematician and bridge player from Newark, Delaware. He is the author of two books he specialized in boundary value problems (LCSH).

Stakgold was born in Oslo, Norway. He studied applied mathematics at Harvard University and earned the Ph.D. in 1949 with a dissertation, The Cauchy Relations In A Molecular Theory of Elasticity, under Léon Nicolas Brillouin. He was professor emeritus of mathematical sciences at the University of Delaware and a researcher at the University of California, San Diego. He was a former president of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).
