In the selection of material for the mathematics course required of all undergraduates at Babson Institute, the author have been guided by the desire to choose topics of mathematical substance which have relevance for students whose major will be in one of the management-economics areas. My original selections were presented in a course given three years ago. At the conclusion of this course, author prepared a syllabus which has been used by me and four colleagues during the last two years. The topics included in this book, and the manner of presentation of these topics, evolved in major part from our work with the syllabus.
The author have placed more than a normal semester's amount of work in the book ti> permit some selectivity by instructors whose course duration is the equivalent of three semester hours. As a consequence, material is available for courses whose duration exceeds three semester hours.
