Early transcendentals calculus textbooks cover the topics relating to the concepts and techniques of differentiation and integration of exponential and logarithmic functions will come before, or earlier in time, than their formal definition.
Late transcendentals calculus textbooks cover the treatment of exponential and logarithmic differentiation and integration is held until the concepts of the functions themselves can be explained in terms of the calculus now having been covered.
The main difference between Early and Late Transcendentals is the introduction of trascendental functions (exponential, logarithms, trigonometric) before or after introducing integrals. Transcendentals are numbers like e and π. Sometimes these numbers are introduces them as constants fairly early on, then you learn formulas for approximating them later (i.e. turns out that there is this natural log that is it’s own derivative and is associated with Euler’s Constant), that is the early transcendentals book.
