This book has been written with the intention of providing an introduction to model abstract algebra for mathematics major8. The reader is not presumed at thc Outllct to possess any previout:! knowledge of the concepts of modem algebra. Accordingly, our beginuing is somewhat elementary, with the exposition in the earlier sections proceeding at a leisurely pace; much of this early material may be covered rapidly on a first reading. An attempt. has been made to keep the book as self-contained as possible. To smooth the path for the unexperienced reader, the first chapter is devoted to a review of the basic facts concerning sets, functions and number theory; it also serves as a suitable vehicle for introducing some of the notation and terminology used subsequently.

About Author :-
Author David M. Burton received his B.A. from Clark University and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Rochester. He joined the faculty of the University of New Hampshire, where he is now Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, in 1959. His teaching experience also includes a year at Yale University, numerous summer institutes for high school teachers, and presentations at meetings of high school teachers’ organizations. Professor Burton is also the author of The History of Mathematics: An Introduction (McGraw-Hill, Seventh edition, 2009) and five textbooks on abstract and linear algebra.
