The author Thomas Hungerford (1923–1988) was a mathematician, he was appointed as professor at the University of Chicago in 1951. He worked on a variety of areas of algebra, including ring theory, with over 100 research papers and over a dozen books.
He received his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He has taught at the University of Washington and at Cleveland State University until 2003. From 2003–2014 he was at Saint Louis University.
