Engineers and scientists need to have an introduction to the basics of linear algebra in a context they understand. Computer algebra systems make the manipulation of matrices and the determination of their properties a simple matter, and in practical applications such software is often essential. However, using this tool when learning about matrices, without first gaining a proper understanding of the underlying theory, limits the ability to use matrices and to apply them to new problems. This book explains matrices in the detail required by engineering or science students, and it discusses linear systems of ordinary differential equations. These students require a straightforward introduction to linear algebra illustrated by applications to which they can relate. It caters of the needs of undergraduate engineers in all disciplines, and provides considerable detail where it is likely to be helpful. According to the author the best way to understand the theory of matrices is by working simple exercises designed to emphasize the theory, that at the same time avoid distractions caused by unnecessary numerical calculations. Hence, examples and exercises in this book have been constructed in such a way that wherever calculations are necessary they are straightforward. For example, when a characteristic equation occurs, its roots (the eigenvalues of a matrix) can be found by inspection. The author of this book is Alan Jeffrey, Emeritus Professor of mathematics at the Univesity of Newcastle upon Tyne. He has given courses on engineering mathematics in UK and US Universities.

This book is based on many courses given by the author to English and American undergraduate students in engineering and the applied sciences. The book separates naturally into two distinct parts, although these are not shown as parts one and two. The first part, represented by Chapters 1–4 and a large part of Chapter 5, gives a straightforward account of topics from the theory of matrices that form part of every basic mathematics course given to undergraduate students in engineering and the applied sciences. However, the presentation of the basic material given in this book is in greater detail than is usually found in such courses. The only unusual topics appearing in the first part of the book are in Chapter 3. These are the inclusion of the technique of least-squares fitting of polynomials to experimental data, and the way matrices enter into a finite difference approximation for the numerical solution of the Laplace equation. The least-squares fitting of polynomials has been included because it is useful and provides a simple application of matrices, while the finite difference approximation for the Laplace equation shows how matrices play a vital part in the numerical solution of this important partial differential equation. This last application also demonstrates one of the ways in which very large matrix equations can be generated when seeking the numerical solution of certain types of problem.

**Alan Jeffrey**, University of Newcastle, NE1 7RU Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom.

Alan Jeffrey Giacomin who Ontario, Canada (1959) is a professor of Chemical Engineering at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario and cross-appointed in the Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering. He has been Editor-In-Chief of Physics of Fluids since 2016.[2] He holds the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Rheology from the Canadian government's Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council.[3] Since 2017, Giacomin has been President of the Canadian Society of Rheology.

Giacomin graduated from St. Thomas High School (Quebec) in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. He later went to Queen's University and completed a B.Sc. Honours in chemical engineering in 1981. He then completed a M.Sc. in chemical engineering in 1983 at Queen's University. Following this, Giacomin joined Professor John Dealy's group at McGill University and completed a Ph.D. in chemical engineering in 1987.

He has been a faculty member in Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he directed the Rheology Research Center for 20 years. He has held visiting professorships in North America, Europe, and Asia at: Université de Sherbrooke, McGill University, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, École des Mines de Paris, the National University of Singapore, Chung Yuan University, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, University of Crete, Shandong University, Shanghai University, Peking University and King Mongkut's University of Technology North Bangkok.

He has served The Society of Rheology as Associate Editor for Business for the Journal of Rheology.[2] In October 2016 he gave the keynote lecture for Rheology of Complex Fluids at the 66th Annual Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference.[4] Giacomin holds Professional Engineer status in Wisconsin and Ontario.[4]
